A question has plagued the right for some time: Why are Oath Keepers and Proud Boys supporting Trump so forcefully? In one recent instance, a police officer in Costa Mesa, California, was photographed wearing a patch with the words "Oath Keeper" on it. This is a more significant trend of antigovernment extremist groups recruiting law enforcement and the military.
The Oklahoma City bombing perpetrator Timothy McVeigh is an example. He was a Gulf War veteran and a sympathizer of the U.S. militia movement. The Oklahoma City bombing was the worst act of domestic terrorism perpetrated by a U.S. citizen. Many antigovernment organizations do not screen their members, but the military experience is usually considered a plus. The Oath Keepers believe that the U.S. government has stripped our rights.
The group is dangerous. It has been linked to white nationalism, and the FBI has declared it a hate group. Its members have engaged in several violent acts in the United States, from Charlottesville to New York City. They are also associated with the violent attack on the Capitol in January 2019.
The Oath Keepers are a large paramilitary group that recruits former law enforcement and military personnel. It emphasizes military training and has leaders who spread misinformation about government plots. Since its formation, the group has become one of the largest anti-government organizations in the country.
