A man gained access to the House of Representatives Speaker's home in San Francisco on Friday night (local time) and met her husband Paul (82). He yelled, according to CNN, "Where's Nancy? Where's Nancy?” After a heated exchange, he hit Paul Pelosi with a hammer.
Paul Pelosi was attacked by a burglar with a hammer at his home in San Francisco; police are investigating.
According to "CNN," the perpetrator is 42-year-old David DePape. DePape spread right-wing extremist views and various conspiracy theories on Facebook – including that the Democrats had rigged the last presidential election and that Donald Trump was the “rightful” President of the United States.
San Francisco Police Chief William Scott also said that DePape had been charged with attempted manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and "several other additional crimes."
The 82-year-old was taken to hospital and operated on for a fractured skull and severe injuries to his right arm and hands. However, doctors expected him to make a full recovery.
The burglar was arrested: "He is in police custody, and investigations into his motive are ongoing," Pelosi's office said. US Capitol Police said they are participating in the San Francisco Police Department investigation and the FBI.
The 42-year-old is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and burglary, among other things.
Nancy Pelosi was not in the Californian city at the time of the burglary: According to the Capitol police, President Joe Biden's party friend was in the capital Washington. The burglary happened about a week and a half before the midterm congressional elections on November 8th.
Nancy Pelosi, whose constituency is in San Francisco, is one of the most powerful politicians in the United States. As Speaker of the House, the 82-year-old is number three in the state after President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
She gained international fame at the beginning of August when, despite Chinese threats, she boarded a plane to Taiwan – and was received there by the government. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was the highest-ranking US visit to Taipei in a quarter-century.
A huge hole gapes in the door.
However, she will probably soon lose her top office: According to polls, the opposition Republicans are likely to wrest the majority in the House of Representatives from the Democrats in the congressional elections.
US President Joe Biden condemned the attack as "disgusting" and linked it to aggressive rhetoric by Donald Trump's Republicans.
The attack was condemned by Republicans, such as Trump's Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, 80, tweeted that he was "appalled and disgusted" by reports that Pelosi was attacked at his home.
McConnell: "I'm glad to hear that Paul is on the mend and that law enforcement is on the case."
